Between Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park there

Between Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park there are over 50 miles of soft-surface trails. After climactic weather events, like last week's winter weather, we need volunteers to help us monitor all of these trails for fallen debris and trees. There's been a number after last week, like this one shown in the picture that Steve, one of our Rapid Responders, found last Saturday. Thanks to our Rapid Responders, hazards like these can be reported in a timely manner in order for them to be addressed.

If you want to join the Rapid Responder team, we have one more training planned for this Saturday. You can find the details for this training using the Linktree in the bio.

We hope you're staying warm out there! PBOT recommends delaying travel plans during these winter weather conditions, so stay safe and indoors if you can!

While we do not recommend going out to the parks, if you do go out then be sure to keep an ear out for falling trees and branches, be aware of potentially slippery trails, and overall just be careful! It is also a good reminder to check local weather conditions and trail closures before visiting Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park during the winter season, even after the snow and ice has thawed. Next week we will also be holding additional trainings for people who are interested in joining our Rapid Response program. Rapid Responders patrol the trails in Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park after climactic weather events in order to report on trail conditions and hazards. We are pleased to announce that Scott Fogarty will be joining the FPC team as our new executive director!

Scott comes to FPC with an extensive history in the conservation space. Previously, Scott served as the Executive Director for the Wild Rivers Land Trust, Northern Alaska Environmental Center, Friends of Trees, and the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center. He has also worked for the US EPA’s Office of Water.

From Scott: “I am excited to help people fall in love with, and recreate in, these incredible natural spaces inside Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park. Parks like these represent part of what makes our region livable, healthy, and fun. I look forward to working with our partners and community members to increase access, address potential fire hazards, increase connectivity with other regional greenspaces, and provide educational and volunteer opportunities for all to enjoy. I also look forward to exploring FPC’s Ancient Forest Preserve and hiking the full length of the Wildwood Trail with my kiddos!”

Want to join us out on the trails? We will be hosting trail work parties, volunteer trainings, and an herb walk with @nunm_edu in February!

🌲: Every week in February we will be hosting volunteer trail maintenance and restoration work parties in Forest Park and/or Marquam Nature Park. We need your help to remove invasive plants and keep the trails safe for park users!

🌲: We are recruiting new volunteers for our rapid responder program. These volunteers patrol trails, especially after climactic weather events, to report trail conditions and hazards, such as downed trees in Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park. We will be hosting two trainings, one each on 2/18 and 2/22.

🌲: We will be continuing our monthly series of herb walks with NUNM! Join us to learn more about the herbs, plants, and more found within Forest Park and your own backyard!

Yesterday was the hearing on Phase 3 of PGE's Harb

Yesterday was the hearing on Phase 3 of PGE's Harborton Reliability Project. One idea I've reflected on after the public hearing is the notion put forth by PGE representatives that Forest Park should not be a time capsule.

As a public park, Forest Park is the opposite of a time capsule in many ways. Nearly every week our staff and volunteers are in the park working to restore and maintain the park, and you, the public, use this park every day for recreation, relaxation, and more.

On behalf of our organization, thank you to everyone who submitted public comments or gave public testimony yesterday. If you missed out, the public record was extended and so public testimony can be submitted until February 5th at 4 PM. The record will fully close on February 19th, and a decision will be made regarding PGE's proposal within 17 days after that point.

Additionally, we need volunteers to help us conduct trail maintenance and restoration work in Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park next week, if you want to join you can find our Events Calendar in the Linktree as well.

One last reminder: tomorrow is the public hearing

One last reminder: tomorrow is the public hearing on Phase 3 of PGE's Harborton Reliability Project. From a recent Oregonian article on the proposal:

"A Portland General Electric proposal to upgrade existing transmission lines in Forest Park would cut down too many trees, harm local efforts to combat climate change and fails to adequately consider alternatives, a searing city staff report concludes."

If the proposal is approved, 4.7 acres of trees would be removed and two wetlands would be permanently filled, not to mention the environmental impact of development within Forest Park.

The hearing is tomorrow at 9 AM and will be held via Zoom. We encourage you to attend virtually and/or submit a public comment. Additionally, @orsierraclub will be hosting an in-person watch party.
