Signage Project

Friends of Forest Park's efforts to update and improve trailhead signage.

Signage Project

Why New Signs?

P   A high priority in the 1995 Forest Park Management Plan.

o       “Provide clear directional signs for entry into the park and for finding facilities within the park.”

o       “Provide interpretive and educational signing to explain the natural resources of the park, including the need for protection, and the need for certain management activities.”

o       “Provide trail signs that indicate type of trail, length and degree of difficulty.”

P   Improvements have languished for lack of funds.

o       Only 4 of the park’s 25+ official entrances have interpretive signage.

o       The current signs are dated and damaged.

P   Lack of signage is a detriment to park users and to Forest Park itself.

o       Users are often confused about the trails and how to access them.

o       Visitors are missing an opportunity to learn about this Portland-area treasure.

o       Poor signage creates an impression that Forest Park is not cared for.

Dated and Deteriorated Signs

Today’s  sign at Germantown and Wildwood shows frame deterioration as well as accumulated effects of vandalism.

The current magazine-style narrative lacks:

o       highlighting of key messages

o        wayfinding information specific to the local entrance.
