Spring is such a great time to explore Forest Park. As the weather improves, many more of us are spending time in Forest Park. Just minutes from downtown Portland, we can go from being in the city to being in the forest. This is something most cities don’t have. We are very fortunate!
As you know, the Forest Park Conservancy is the leading nonprofit organization that maintains and repairs these trails, year in and year out. We are very proud of the work our volunteers and donors make possible – ensuring trails in Forest Park are in great shape.
FPC, in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation, spearheads trail maintenance work in Forest Park. Each year, hundreds of volunteers spend thousands of hours on the trails. We’re raking fall leaves, removing culverts and replacing them with better alternatives, adding rock walls and gravel to make the trails more stable and even.
Beyond our enjoyment, the work we do on the trails has big environmental benefits, too. By maintaining and repairing trails, we are keeping streams cleaner by reducing runoff which is so harmful to native fish and other water-loving species. This is important because Forest Park is not just important for recreation. It plays a central role to our environmental health. Poorly maintained trails result in unhealthy streams.
With strong volunteer support, we’re making real headway towards our goals of having the best urban hiking trails in the country!
This is hard work and we are so proud of our accomplishments! But there’s so much more to be done. This spring, I invite you to support our trail work by making a contribution to the Forest Park Conservancy. No gift is too small and of course, no gift is too big!
Your support helps FPC:
- repair damaged trails,
- work on grading improvements,
- cut back vegetation,
- rake fall leaves to prevent runoff into streams, and
- build fences to protect fragile habitat.
Your gift helps us coordinate volunteers and purchase the materials we need for trail projects — but more than just rocks and gravel, your support ensures Forest Park is healthier and more accessible. When you support our work, every time you enjoy the trails of Forest Park, you’ll know that you made a difference.
Thank you!
