Green Jobs and Training Program Update: The Unified Monitoring Protocol (UMP)

Forest Park ConservancyUncategorized

The Green Jobs Team Members have been learning how to collect important data for a cooperative effort to protect the Forest Park ecosystem called the Unified Monitoring Protocol (UMP).

Partners brought together under the Greater Forest Park Conservation Initiative developed a shared protocol so that agencies can collaborate and compare their findings.

The intention of the protocol is to track the health of the environment. This collaboration between land managers and data collecting organizations makes the data stronger and more useful for building conservation strategies over time.

The Green Team Members have been collecting data on the trees of Forest Park, including the canopy cover per acre, and the rotten and decaying matter (deadwood), and also completed a vegetation study. This data will be compared with what has been collected from other agencies like West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District (WMSWCD), Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), and groups like the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC).

So far, all 14 transect data have been collected FPC staff are now working to share that information with our partners. Staff will go back in July or August to create an accurate field map.
