The Forest Park Conservancy (FPC) is seeking to enroll five (5) positions in its Green Jobs Workforce Program. The Green Jobs Workforce Program has a mission to create space, access, and pathways into the environmental and green infrastructure workforce for people of color. 

The Green Jobs Workforce Program works in partnership with local community organizations and programs (Blueprint Foundation, Ecotrust, and  Wisdom of the Elders through their Green Workforce Academy; and Love is King) and environmental conservation organizations (West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District; and Columbia Land Trust) to provide support for a 12-month full-time paid position. 

FPC and its partners are committed to supporting the individuals during the program and after its completion, including flexibility in work schedule, transportation assistance, and connection to destination employers.

About the Green Jobs Workforce Program:

  • Eligibility: The Program is available for people of color (18-26 years old).
  • Status: At-will employment for a maximum term of 12 months.
  • Salary: $17.00/hour.
  • Start date: June 6, 2022
  • Schedule: Full time (40 hrs/ week). Monday through Friday with occasional weekend hours. 
  • Program opportunities: Interns gain work experience working alongside FPC managers through one of the [5] positions open; learn and work on projects with other local conservation organizations including Columbia Land Trust and West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District; and learn about leadership in environmental and social justice with Love is King’s Operation Roam.
  • Work location: Interns’ workday will start at the following locations depending on placement when not working remotely as agreed upon with its direct supervisor: 
    • Forest Park Conservancy: 833 SW 11th Ave., Portland, OR 97205; and 2960 NW Upshur St., Portland, OR 97210

POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

Development and Communications Coordinator (One (1) Position Available)

Supervisor: Director of Communications and Corporate Partnerships

  • Digital Communications (55% time allocation) 
    • Opportunity to support the drafting of e-newsletters using Mailchimp 
    • Conducting interviews and drafting blog posts to share on FPC’s digital   platforms 
    • Drafting posts for FPC’s social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) 
    • Working with Volunteer Coordinator to support outreach for volunteer events. 
    • Assist with scheduling of TBD Student-Educators to specific field trips.
    • Adapt existing field trip written materials for use by Student-Educators.
    • Adapt existing assessments for use as a post-training, Student-Educator evaluations.
  • Print Communications (25%  time allocation) 
    • Proofreading, securing photos, and opportunity to support the design of biannual print newsletter.
  • Events (10% time allocation) 
    • Procuring donated items for raffles, or food and drink 
    • Design and printing of flyers and developing a communications plan 
    • Assist with set up and coordination at events  
  • Grant research and prospecting  (5%  time allocation)
  • Participate in career development, training, conferences, and team-building activities- (5%  time allocation)

Stewardship and Volunteer Coordinator (One (1) Position Available)

Supervisor: Stewardship Manager

  • Outreach and Education (35%  time allocation)
    • Coordinate field trips with students.
    • Create environmental education lesson plans for students focusing on aspects of Forest Parks. 
    • Support and assist in coordinating volunteer programs and events.
    • Support and assist in coordinating educational hikes and outings.
  • Volunteer Ambassador Program (30% time allocation)
    • Support FPC Volunteer Stewardship Program manager with day-to-day logistics of Ambassador Program, including site assignments, outreach materials, training, and reporting.
    • Assist with outreach to new partner organizations to increase awareness and participation in the program.  
    • Help create engaging and educational materials to share with users at trailheads.
    • Assist with data tracking completed by Ambassadors after each shift.  
    • Maintain direct and consistent communication with the Volunteer Stewardship Manager in order to ensure logistics and operation of the program run smoothly. 
  • Discovery Walks Program (25% time allocation) 
    • Assist the Volunteer Stewardship Manager in the development and implementation of FPC’s Discovery Walks Program.
    • Lead weekly hikes on a diverse setup of topics.  
    • Professionally represent FPC to volunteers and the public in Forest Park 
    • Assist with building new relationships with BIPOC organizations and coordinating culturally relevant hike opportunities in Forest Park.  
  • Grant research and prospecting (5%  time allocation)
  • Participate in career development, training, conferences, and team-building activities (5%  time allocation)

Conservation Technician (Two (2) Position Available)

Supervisor: Land Stewardship & Workforce Managers 

  • Habitat Restoration and land stewardship (65% time allocation)
    • Support on-the-ground work associated with invasive species control, restoration, and monitoring activities. 
    • Help coordinate seasonal restoration crew
    • Support routine maintenance (invasive species removal and revegetation) of private properties currently undergoing active restoration through Forest Park Conservancy’s Canopy Weed Program.
    • Support community engagement and outreach for forest fire prevention and defensible space with neighbors around Forest Park.
    • Coordinate and/or assist work in the Ancient Forest Preserve.
    • Coordinate and/or assist work in other restoration projects areas managed by Forest Park Conservancy
      • Cottrell Property
      • Holman/Stenzel Wedge
    • Support data collection and monitoring activities associated with stewardship of conservation easements held by Forest Park Conservancy in the area.
    • Coordinate and/or assist work in other restoration projects areas managed by Columbia Land Trust
  • Working with Stewardship Manager to support outreach for volunteer events (25% time allocation)
  • Grant research and prospecting (5% time allocation)
  • Participate in career development, training, conferences, and team-building activities- (5% time allocation)

Trail Technician (One (1) Position Available)

Supervisor: Trails Manager

  • Trail Maintenance and Repair (65% time allocation) 
    • Support FPC Trails manager in projects that could include tread work, brushing, raking, logouts, new trail construction, rock retaining wall construction and repair, turnpike, drainage, bridge, and split rail fence construction and trail decommissioning. 
    • Assist with tracking and recording inventory of tools and supplies 
    • Assist with data tracking by completing a daily report each day  
    • Maintain direct and consistent communication with the Trails Manager in order to assist with project preparation, event planning, and tool/equipment/office maintenance 
  • Working with Stewardship Manager to support outreach for volunteer events (15% time allocation)
  • Grant research and prospecting (5% time allocation)
  • Participate in career development, training, conferences, and team-building activities (5% time allocation)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 18 to 26 years of age 
  • Ability to comfortably lift 50 lbs. and traverse uneven terrain for 7 continuous hours, 3-4 days per week often while in challenging weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (only for trail technician and conservation technician positions)
