Latest News From the Forest Park Wildfire Risk Reduction Project

Mikey BrooksUncategorized

For the past few years, as part of the Forest Park Wildfire Risk Reduction Project, Portland Parks & Recreation, Portland Fire & Rescue, and Forest Park Conservancy have been conducting wildfire mitigation work and outreach in and around Forest Park. This is made possible due to a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant to reduce the potential risks and impacts of wildfire in and around Forest Park. This work has included vegetation management, community outreach, and more.

As the program nears the end of its funding cycle, Portland Parks & Recreation has produced a project summary describing the work conducted during this project. This includes details of the project area, methodology, project considerations, and recommendations for project managers conducting wildfire mitigation work on public lands. If you’re curious about what kind of work was conducted in Forest Park over the past three years as part of this project, we highly suggest reading this project summary.

While it is currently late December, wildfire mitigation is a year-round effort. If you are a homeowner, we strongly encourage you to look into ways you can keep your home and neighborhood safe from wildfire now, before we enter the next wildfire season. Getting your home assessed for wildfire risks, becoming involved in a local Firewise community, and reducing fuels on your property, are all steps you can take to prevent wildfire in your community.
