Mid-summer Trails Program Update: Trail Maintenance in the Time of COVID-19

Ingry ThurowTrails

Our field staff has brushed about 21.5 miles over the past two months—an impressive number for just six people, with nearly all of our team pitching in to help close down short trail sections as we go. We’re taking a week to give our bodies a break and re-evaluate our trail work priorities. These will likely include a bit more brushing (like finishing up Maple Trail, and possibly some work near Springville trailhead). But we’re also planning to spruce up our trails at the Ancient Forest Preserve and try to work out a way to get started on other technical trail projects in Forest Park.

Significant improvements on Firelane 5, Wildwood milepost 12-13, and Wildwood milepost 19.5-21 were on the docket for 2020, but we are constantly re-evaluating what’s possible in this changing world.

If nothing else, this summer has highlighted how much we appreciate our volunteers.

We rely on you to reach our fieldwork goals, and that’s not all: not only do trail work parties connect us all to the Tualatin Mountains where Forest Park resides, but they also connect us as a community.

If you’ve ever worked on a trail project with a team you know what we mean.

Along with making our trails more beautiful and sustainable, laughter and companionship make this work worthwhile, and without being able to invite you along for the ride it just doesn’t feel quite right. We look forward to making more memories with you someday!

If you’d like to support our work, become a monthly donor today so that we can continue to protect, restore, and connect people to the trails of this amazing 5,200-acre urban forest. Thank you for your support!
