Supporting a STEAM Curriculum to Nurture Future Forest Park Stewards

Alejandro OrizolaGreen Jobs Internship Program

We are proud to share that the Forest Park Conservancy’s Nature Education Outing Program which connects youth to the learning opportunities found in nature was awarded funding! Join us in thanking Metro for their support through the Nature in Neighborhoods nature education and outdoor experience grants program.

About the Nature Education Outing Program

The Nature Education Outing Program is a collaboration between the Forest Park Conservancy (FPC), Elevate Oregon, and Vive NW. The program supports science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) curriculum for students at Parkrose Middle School in NE Portland.

Partners will host three classroom sessions and one nature outing per month in Forest Park and on Metro properties. To further mentorship opportunities, the Forest Park Conservancy’s Green Jobs Team Members will play a critical role in developing and implementing the program. By working together, both the Green Team and the Parkrose students will further their academic and leadership skills.

Vive NW will support the program by recruiting volunteers to support outings and will lend expertise in video production and editing of footage recorded during the outings.

The Next Generation of Stewards

The sustainability of Forest Park and other natural areas in Portland Metro relies on the support and engagement of the community. Without a strong culture of stewardship, the future of our natural areas will be threatened.

This program will align with FPC’s mission and plans coming years, which will focus on expanding communities that are served by Forest Park and FPC.

The proposed Nature Education Outings Program will allow us to work and develop those future generations of stewards.

While the Nature Education Outing Program will run through 2021, due to COVID-19, we are evaluating some remote and online activities for the remainder of 2020 and may extend the program through 2022.

We look forward to sharing updates on this program with you. To receive updates, subscribe to FPC’s monthly e-newsletter.

Please just us in thanking Metro for their ongoing partnership and support!
