We Need Your Help to Remove Invasive Weeds on National Public Lands Day

Forest Park ConservancyUncategorized

Invasive weeds are one of the biggest threats to the health of our local forests. Plants like English ivy were introduced to the region as ornamental plants and then were able to spread and outcompete native plants. English ivy, if unchecked, will completely take over the forest floor and choke out trees, resulting in an “ivy desert”, areas comprised only of ivy after it has replaced all of the native plant life. This, in turn, disrupts the whole ecosystem as many animals rely on the native plant population, such as small mammals and ground-nesting birds which populate the forest floor.

To manage the English ivy in Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park, we are holding three volunteer work parties on National Public Lands Day (Saturday, September 28th) to remove ivy in the parks. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest day of volunteering on our public lands, and with over 5,200 acres in Forest Park alone, we are going to need everyone’s help!

That’s not all though. The day after, we will be reusing the ivy we collect for a free ivy basket weaving workshop the day after! This is a great way for us to remove these invasive plants and repurpose them into something beautiful.

Additionally, September 28th will mark the return of the Nasty Challenge, with an additional new route in Marquam Nature Park! The Nasty Challenge is a running challenge and fundraising event that brings together the running community to run and raise money for Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park. More details to come soon on the 2024 Nasty Challenge!
